Mini

This is Mini.
Mini was adopted from the Oregon Humane Society's Second Chance program in 2018 when she was 11 years old. She had come from a rescue in Tillamook with her two 10 year old offspring. Mini was a mama for many years! Her mouth was foul smelling but she was so sweet. I knew adopting her meant dental work- I've spent a lot of money already on this discounted dog. He teeth are fine now. I like her little kisses- nothing gets Mini down; she's always trying her best.

She seemed to have been loved for a long time before I met her. I was so curious about her past that I called up the shelter in Tillamook and asked if they remembered three chihuahuas over the summer. The volunteer I spoke to remembered Satin -her original name- and her babies. According to her, they were owned by a gentleman in town and was seen walking them around town, but he ended up in legal trouble and was going to jail for a while. The shelter explained they wouldn't be able to hold on to them while he was incarcerated. She was shipped off to Portland and I picked her up the day the was available for adoption.

My Mother, the Whore

                I was warned that hanging out with the wrong crowd could lead to a loss of faith. Like a balloon, my faith was supposedly a mysterious invisible pressure given to me by Heavenly Father, perfectly sealed off from the sharpness of the world, sequestered in the protective hands of my family and my Mormon community in Layton, Utah.   These were my safeguards, seemingly firm to the touch, these hands were to guide and hold my faith gingerly and tenderly for time and all eternity. My Faith Balloon type, if there are types of faith balloons, would be one of those weird, really long snake-like balloons clowns twist into shapes for children. My faith was thin, narrow, strictly purposed in structure for shaping into something else, it was clumsy and awkward if left straightened and unshaped. My Ghost Daughter

    It occurred to me that I never wrote about Ruby. I never told her story in full because its such a sad one- I have spent 23 years feeling like I’ve carried the unspeakable around- protecting other people from knowing about the darker side of motherhood I was trapped in for a brief period of my life. Even though what happened is incredibly common among women of childbearing age, it’s still a fact of life that nobody wants to hear, so I kept my story buried below the pleasantries and superficialness of being around others who haven’t experienced something as nightmarish. Nobody wants to have me bring down the room with my bummer of a life story. Even if it’s the biggest event in my life that affected me in every way- even if I think about it every day, I don’t talk about her because of other people’s discomfort at hearing it.
