Mini

Image
This is Mini. Mini was adopted from the Oregon Humane Society's Second Chance program in 2018 when she was 11 years old. She had come from a rescue in Tillamook with her two 10 year old offspring. Mini was a mama for many years! Her mouth was foul smelling but she was so sweet. I knew adopting her meant dental work- I've spent a lot of money already on this discounted dog. He teeth are fine now. I like her little kisses- nothing gets Mini down; she's always trying her best. She seemed to have been loved for a long time before I met her. I was so curious about her past that I called up the shelter in Tillamook and asked if they remembered three chihuahuas over the summer. The volunteer I spoke to remembered Satin -her original name- and her babies. According to her, they were owned by a gentleman in town and was seen walking them around town, but he ended up in legal trouble and was going to jail for a while. The shelter explained they wouldn't be...

Bettie

Image
Bettie at Cannon Beach Bettie was about two years old when I adopted her from a no-kill shelter on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend in 2008. Even though I was a full grown woman and already had an actual human child, the idea of owning a dog was daunting. I wasn't sure I could do it. She was afraid of everything, poor girl.  My understanding was that she was found wandering in Lebanon Oregon. She was too timid to be in the kennels with the other dogs, so they had her in a small pen in the reception area where it was more quiet. We were going to figure things out together. At first she was so terrified of being in the vehicle she would vomit or poop all over the place. I had to keep extra blankets in the car. I sat her in the passenger seat and fed her baby carrots until she wasn't scared anymore. In fact, Bettie would go on to spend much of her time in the car and come to find it a comforting place, like a den on wheels. She went with me to work at the lab, and to PS...

Frida Lu

Image
This is Frida Lu.  I adopted her from the Lexi-Dog/Oregon Humane Society Second Chance program in 2013 when she was two years old. The name they had given her was 'Merrily', and if you knew her for even ten seconds, you'd understand what an insult that would be had she had been aware of it. At the time I was a regular volunteer at the Humane Society as a placement coordinator and as a vet assistant because I'd been laid off for a time and was exploring pet services as a career alternative to engineering (hahaha). There were many dogs I fostered from 2012-2015 that I didn't want to adopt. This dog was different- I immediately knew she needed to come with me. She came from a kill-shelter in California and had just whelped her puppies in foster care. That's all I knew about her past but what I could see about her the day I met her for her morning walk. Her kennel was tidy after being in all night, and she walked very nicely with her ears turned towards me while we...
